Coaching
Arrangements During Holiday Period
22
December
2005
During
the holidays our new coaching team will be conducting TVSC
training sessions. The team now includes new coaches
Stephanie Cossetto and Ben Huntley, both of whom recently
undertook their Swimming Australia Green License Coaching
Course in Sydney. Steph and Ben bring State level swimming
experience to their coaching and add to the qualified team of
David Murphy, Justene Cannon-Taylor, Bethany Miles and Greg
Wright. Greg will be assisting with several sessions over the
holiday period especially when David is absent on
representative duties with our swimmers at the State Age
Championships. Greg’s learn to swim business is flourishing
and it is great that he has made time to coach for us over the
holiday period. We'd like to take this opportunity to
recommend Greg's swim school - Trevally Swim School at
Wanniassa (Phone: 6291 4162). All who know Greg
will know that he is offering quality personalised swim
teaching at reasonable rates - thoroughly recommended by all
at Tuggeranong Vikings Swim Club.

TVRU&ASC Scholarships
25 November 2005
Our major sponsor, the Tuggeranong Valley Rugby Union & Amateur Sports Club provides scholarships to members of its affiliate clubs entering Year 11 to assist them to successfully combine their sport and academics. The scholarships are for Years 11 and 12 although successful applicants need to reapply for the second year. If any of our members will be entering Year 11 in 2006 and are interested in applying for the scholarships, they should contact our Sponsorship Co-Ordinator, STEVE COSSETTO by e-mail or phone 0407 734 407, as soon as possible to obtain a copy of the application form. Completed application forms should be returned to Steve by Wednesday, 8 December.
General Meeting, Wednesday, 7 December
22 November 2005
A General Meeting will be held at the pool at 5.30 pm on Wednesday, 7 December. The reason for the meeting is to discuss and decide the following proposal: "That fees be increased by 10 percent across all squads from 1 January 2006 to cover the cost of GST as determined by the ATO. " Members may not be aware that TVSC has been absorbing the 10 percent GST payment since first incurred by the club in April 2003. As it is no longer possible to do this, we need to approve the 10 percent increase as of the next billing cycle. We need at least 15 members to pass the motion, so as this is pick up time for many parents, please make the effort to come into the pool and participate in the voting - it is anticipated that this will not take long.
Equipment Lost from Pool on Weekend of 5-6 November
15 November 2005
Could the person who borrowed a new Speedo lightblue/darkblue triangle shaped kick board and new yellow and blue Speedo size 9 – 11 fins from the cage at TLLC on either Saturday, 5 November or Monday morning, 7 November, please return them to either the coach on duty or to Kerry Trabinger (62927074) AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. We appreciate that these items may have accidentally been taken home by a swimmer, but as they were a very recent birthday present, their owner is looking forward to being able to wear them once again at training. We would be grateful for your co-operation in this matter and urge that swimmers in future ensure that they have their own equipment at training and do not borrow other members'.
Time
Keeping at Meets
– How You Can Help
11
October 2005
With
quite a few meets coming up, it is time to remind our members of their obligation to
TVSC and the ACT swimming community to assist with time
keeping at meets. Because
we usually send large teams to local meets, we are expected to
provide several time keepers – sometimes up to six at a
time. Several of
the Spring and Summer meets run over two days.
This doubles our responsibility to provide time
keepers. Unfortunately,
recently at meets this job has fallen on the shoulders of just
a few, sometimes requiring parents to be behind the blocks all
day. This is not fair to those involved and should not be
necessary considering TVSC’s large participation at meets
and membership in general.
Some of our new parents may be a little hesitant in
volunteering for this job but, please, don’t be.
You do not need to be qualified as a time keeper to
hold a watch at the end of a lane just willing to lend a hand.
On most occasions we require three time keepers per
lane so there is always someone more experienced to show you
what to do. You
will get the best seat in the house (it’s also cooler on
pool deck compared to the stands), will get fed and watered
for your assistance, get to meet other club members and catch
up on poolside gossip, and your kids will be thrilled that you
are helping their club. TVSC
operates a roster system so that you will not be required to
time keep all day. Shifts are usually for 2 hours.
We try to arrange it that parents only need to time
keep once over a two day weekend but sometimes, due to low
numbers of parents attending, parents will be asked to back up
on the second day. Of
course, if more parents attended and assisted (and they
should!) this would be unnecessary.
You can also choose which time period is best for you
– i.e. if you are only there for the morning, then you can
time keep during that time and don’t have to wait around
because of time keeping commitments.
So, please, if you are approached at a meet by a TVSC
parent to assist with the timekeeping, please be positive in
your response. Alternatively,
you can fill in our time keeping form (here) and slip it in
with your child’s entries – this way you get in first and
choose a time most convenient to you.

Fund
Raiser - Bunnings Sausage Sizzle, 29 October
16
October 2005
TVSC has been given the opportunity to run the weekly sausage sizzle at Bunnings, Newcastle Street, Fyshwick on Saturday, 29 October. We will be cooking and selling sausages from 8.00 am to approximately 3.00 pm on that day. We are, therefore, calling for volunteers to assist us with the operation of the barbeque. WE NEED YOUR HELP! We are asking Vikings members to donate two hours of their time to come along and assist with cooking and selling the sausages. We will need three or four people per shift. If we get many volunteers the roster can be amended to a shorter period. ASTRID SMITH has been charged with organising the fund raiser so if you can help, please contact Astrid (by e-mail or ph. 62927696) and let her know your preferred time slot. Senior swimmers are also welcome to come along and help. Don't forget that all profits will be used to sponsor an upcoming special event for your children.
Kick
Off to Summer Season
11
October 2005
36
Vikings swimmers attended the CSD Pentathlon at the AIS last
weekend. This
novel meet gave our swimmers the opportunity to start off the
long course season in a fun way – a fifty metre swim of each
stroke followed by a 200m IM.
There were lots of PBs swum, indicating lots of
improvement over the winter season.
Most impressive were SRECKO ANTOSKI, TESS APPELQVIST,
JOSHUA BROWN, TIFFANY DAVIES, AMANDA FLETCHER and MIKHALA
PETERS who all achieved 100 percent PBs. There were some big improvements, particularly in the Medley
– LUKE ABBERTON (18 sec improvement), SRECKO ANTOSKI (8 secs),
DEREK BAYLEY (12 secs), CHELSEA BRODIE (7 secs), AMANDA
FLETCHER (18 secs), CHEYENNE PETERS (8 secs) and ALEX RAMSAY
(9 secs). Well
done to all! You
can find results for Boys,
Girls
and TVSC Swimmers
at our Local
Meets page.
TVSC
Swim-a-thon - 14 October
11
October 2005
Don't forget that the TVSC Swim-a-thon will be held this Friday, 14 October. It will be held instead of the usual Friday night training program and will be followed by Club Night. All squads will take part in the Swim-a-thon during their normal training times and distances attempted will be structured to suit different squads, ages and swimmers. You still have time to chase up some last minute sponsors. To find out more about the Swim-a-thon and to get a copy of the sponsorship form, please click here. Don't forget Mums and Dads that we will also require your assistance as lap counters.
New
Swimming Year - Registration Due 1 October
25
September 2005
This is a quick reminder that Swimmer Registration (Capitation) is due on 1 October. All swimmers who compete after 1 October MUST HAVE PAID THEIR CAPITATION FEE so if you are planning on entering a meet scheduled after that date, make sure you have filled in the relevant form and paid your $25.50 to our Registrar. Please note that not only competing swimmers must be registered for the 2005-2006 swimming year. All swimmers who take place in swim club activities, including training, must also be registered members.
Awesome
Results for Our Swimmers at the TVSC Development/Intermediate
Meet
13
September 2005
Approximately 60 Vikings swimmers participated in the recent TVSC Development/Intermediate Meet. This was the last meet of the Swimming ACT Kippax Winter Development/Intermediate Series. Final series results will be released soon. Our Vikings swimmers performed brilliantly with a huge number of PBs achieved. Most impressive were NICK ALCAZAR-STEVENS with 5/5 PBS, LUKE ABBERTON (5/6), TAYLOR BRODIE (3/3), TAMSIN DE MEILLON (4/5), DOM GARLICK (4/5), NICK PHILIPPA (5/5), and ALEX RAMSAY (5/5). Biggest improvements were LUKE ABBERTON'S 200 IM (14 secs), NICK ALCAZAR-STEVENS' 200 Back (13 secs), BLACK APPELQVIST'S 200 Back (31 secs!), NATHAN DE MEILLON'S 50 Free (9 secs), LACHLAN GRIMM'S 200 IM (6 secs) and 200 Breast (19 secs - even with a Lighthouse view!), ZAC NEULINGER'S 50 Free (6 secs) and 50 Breast (5 secs), ALEX RAMSAY'S 200 IM (5 secs), MEAGAN RAMSAY'S 200 Back (8 secs), 200 Fly (8 secs) and 200 Breast (6 secs) and THOMAS RAMSAY'S 100 Breast (8 secs). We also believe that one of our senior swimmers is contemplating switching from Fly to Breaststroke after an unexpected and very impressive 8 second PB in her 100 Breaststroke event. There are rumours that she might even start doing the stroke at training now! Congratulations to all for their great efforts. We would also like to pass on to all involved in the organisation of the event our warmest gratitude for their assistance in the planning of the event as well as for their help on the day. Thanks to all. Results for Boys, Girls and TVSC Swimmers can be found at our Local Results page. Keep your eyes on this site over the next week or so for some photos from the meet.

Information Evening to Discuss New Squad Structure
16
August 2005
From 1 October the Tuggeranong Vikings Squads will be restructured to better meet the needs and aspirations of the swimmers in the club.
Our goal is to provide squads with a training atmosphere of learning, challenge and commitment that lead to excellence. The squad restructure is a new beginning with a planned progression of excellence that optimizes critical growth periods in each athlete's personal development.
We believe each athlete will reap invaluable long-term benefits from a total commitment to excellence and the "team concept" whether he/she chooses to make an athletic career out of swimming or not. A challenging environment that places the needs of the team first, will surround athletes in our program. We will expect the best of all swimmers and we will therefore set high goals and train toward our goals every day.
An
Information Night to discuss the new TVSC squad structure will
be held on Thursday evening, 25 August at 6.00 pm downstairs
at the Town Centre Sports Club at Greenway. All TVSC
swimmers and parents are invited to attend to hear Head Coach,
David Murphy, speak about the future for the club.
Training will take place that evening but will be held earlier
(please speak to your coach) for those squads who usually
commence training at 5.00 pm. Don't miss this important
chance to find out how the new squad structure will affect
you/your child. Be there!
Looking
for Volunteers - New Club Night Co-Ordinator and
Representatives for ACT Sub-Committees
16
August 2005
Our current Club Night Co-Ordinator has been forced to resign due to ill health and we are looking for a replacement. The job is quite easy as our Race Secretary looks after the computer and manual entry and seeding of entries, so all that is required is for someone to oversee the equipment (watches, chairs, etc. - and there are always volunteers to assist), order and collect the barbeque ingredients and organise all our willing helpers on the night. Club Night is held around once a month so will not take up too much of your time. If you can assist, please contact TVSC President Rod Hore by e-mail. He will be glad to hear from you.
Also, TVSC has been asked by Swimming ACT (as have all ACT clubs) to provide a representative on two very important sub-committees, the Brophy Committee (to assist with arrangements for the James Brophy Memorial Inter-District Sprint Meet held every March) and the Annual Presentation Night Committee (to assist with arrangements for Swimming ACT's Annual Presentation Function, usually held in May each year. No particular skills are required and this is an ideal opportunity for you to assist your club. If you wish to volunteer, please contact TVSC Vice President, Trace Pitts by e-mail.

Introducing
TVSC's New Head Coach
10
July 2005
David Murphy was recently
announced as TVSC's
new Head Coach. Most of you will know David as Assistant
Coach at TVSC and prior to that at Brindabella Swim
Club. We welcome David to his new role and look forward
to lots of exciting things happening at Vikings in the
future. Over the next few weeks David and the rest of
the coaching crew will be looking at individual swimmers and
squad structure with a mind to putting together a new and invigorated
program for TVSC. You can find out a little more about
David by clicking
